Immanuel Lutheran's elementary school offers full-day classes for students in grades Kindergarten through fifth grade (K-5). Core subjects in all grades include reading, spelling, vocabulary, English, handwriting, mathematics, science and social studies. We also provide instruction in technology, Spanish, music, art, physical education (PE) and library time to all students beginning in Kindergarten.
Living Our Faith in the elementary school
All students participate in weekly chapel and are grouped into mixed-age chapel families. Offerings are given to a selected monthly chapel project and have included Nation-to-Nation Ministries, Life Choices Pregnancy Center, House of Neighborly Service, ILC Pastor's Pantry, and Samaritan's Purse. Often our students create and write "Heart Warmer" cards for those serving in the military, to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries, give encouragement, get well, and thank you notes to acknowledge special service to our school.
At Christmas time, many classes collect gifts for needy Loveland area families. Our church and school prepares shoe boxes that share the love of Jesus to children around the world through Operation Christmas Child.
Our second graders are trimming, sorting, counting, and organizing the Box Tops for Education and Campbells Soup labels for redemption. The third grade class has adoptive grandparents that they visit monthly at the Good Samaritan Village. Fourth graders weekly clean, straighten, re-stock, and organize the books, pencils, and cards in the ILC sanctuary to get it ready for Sunday morning. Fifth graders assist with outdoor clean-up of our facility.
Homework
Kindergarten students have minimal homework, although we do encourage parents to reinforce the concepts they are learning at school and to read aloud to their children regularly.
All students in 1st through 5th grade will have some homework, particularly on Monday through Thursday. If the student is effectively using his or her class time, it should not exceed the 10 minutes per grade guidelines. A minimum of fifteen minutes of reading per night is encouraged to establish strong reading skills. Mathematics is the most common daily homework in elementary school. Book reports are assigned on a monthly basis.
Kindergarten
It is our goal that Kindergarten children students move comfortably into first grade with the following skills:
- Good understanding of letters, consonant sounds, short vowel sounds and words, and sight words
- Recognition of numerals one to 31, and count past 100
- Beginning concept of addition and subtraction
- Ability to speak and write good sentences
Kindergarten students have weekly music, art, physical education, computer lab, Spanish, and library time. They experience field trips, have class theme parties, and participate in show and share time.
Placement of Your Child into Kindergarten
Children enrolling in Kindergarten must be five years of age by the first day of school for the year they enroll. Our teachers will schedule a time for your child to complete the Developmental Observation from the Gesell Institute of Human Development to insure proper placement. This is NOT an intelligence test, but rather helps our teachers assess your child's developmental age. This test has proven to be very effective to gauge a child's readiness for Kindergarten and success when they start school.
Extended Classroom Learning
At Immanuel, all elementary school classes have scheduled field trips throughout the year. We find that the hands-on learning in an environment outside the classroom creates a valuable experience.
